What is a Scenario Paintball Game?

By Spiro Mamaligas

A Paintball Scenario Game is a multi-hour paintball event that is centered on a storyline or theme. It is best described as a living storybook that has a prologue or theme assigned to it from the director and an outcome that is derived by the participation of the players involved. Typically, a scenario game is played continuously over a 24-hour period (from noon on Saturday until noon on Sunday). However, 12, 20 and even 36-hour games are currently being hosted by scenario producers and can be just as enjoyable and effective as 24-hour games.

In a scenario game, roles are assigned to each player. A role-player, or character, may even interact with others without having to use a paintball marker if one chooses. Characters are an essential part of a scenario game as they help to determine the outcome of the storyline. Roles that are common to scenario games include medics, engineers, demolition experts, helicopter pilots, squad leaders, generals, and even spies and double agents. There are many other roles and characters that are specific to each scenario event. Some players even like to create their own characters in light of the theme of the game. This is perfectly acceptable as long as it is cleared through the scenario producer.

Many players attend scenario games with a team of players, although it is not necessary. When you register to play in a game, you or your team is assigned to the side, or "army" for whom you will be playing. There are typically two or more large "armies" in an event. The ultimate goal in a scenario game is for each army to earn points through completing "missions", collecting props, general kills and role playing interactions (such as meetings); armies are working and interacting together toward a common goal. Naturally, the army that acquires the most points at the end of the game wins.

Common items that are brought by players to scenario games include needed and required items such as face protection and paintball equipment. Other optional items are: walkie-talkies or radios, homemade props, and flashlights or other night seeing devices. Many players like using a GPS to track the field since a scenario game is usually played on a large acreage field. A map of the field with key positions will always be included in your registration package or obtainable at the event.

There are so many different experiences and expectations that can be associated with scenario games that the list is endless. Overall, a player can look forward to an enjoyable paintball experience that includes continuous play, the opportunity to interact with other players, the ability to use one's imagination and creativity to enhance the team's chances at victory, quick re-entry into the game, and mission-oriented goals that do not necessarily involve marking a player out. However, the most important experience and expectation is one of playing cooperatively with a large group and having a great deal of fun in the process.
